Nursery Design Timeline: When to Start + How to Create a Thoughtful Nursery at Any Stage

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is, “When should I start designing my nursery?” The answer is more flexible (and more reassuring) than most people expect.

Designing a nursery is one of the most emotional and meaningful parts of preparing for a baby. It’s not just about creating a beautiful space — it’s about building an environment that feels calm, supportive, functional, and safe for both baby and parent.

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“When should I start designing my nursery?”

The short answer: earlier is helpful … but there is no such thing as too late. Moms reach out at every stage, from early pregnancy to weeks after their baby is born, and every timeline is valid.

The Ideal Nursery Design Timeline

If everything goes according to plan, the sweet spot for starting nursery design is between 12–20 weeks pregnant. This allows time to thoughtfully plan layout, select furniture, and order pieces without feeling rushed.

But real life rarely follows a perfect schedule. And that’s completely normal.

A Simple Month-by-Month Guide

First Trimester (0–12 Weeks): Vision + Inspiration

Gather inspiration, define your style, and start thinking about how you want the space to feel. No decisions need to be finalized yet - this phase is about clarity and intention.

Second Trimester (13–26 Weeks): Design + Planning

This is the ideal time to begin working with a nursery designer. You probably know the baby’s sex, and things are settling into a more confident stage. Layout, furniture, lighting, storage, and safety planning all happen here, allowing the design to come together intentionally.

Third Trimester (27–40 Weeks): Ordering + Installation

Furniture arrives, styling takes place, and the nursery becomes fully functional and ready for baby’s arrival.

What If You’re Starting Late?

Many families reach out late in pregnancy or after their baby is already home - and I want you to know, it is never too late to create a thoughtful nursery.

Some of the most meaningful projects happen after baby arrives, when parents better understand their routines and needs. Whether we’re starting from scratch or working with existing furniture, I approach every project with the same level of care and intention.

Even if the nursery is partially set up, we can:

  • Improve layout and flow

  • Enhance functionality

  • Upgrade key pieces

  • Create a beautiful, cohesive, calming environment

When Is the Best Time to Hire a Nursery Designer?

Anytime. Early planning helps everything come together smoothly, but it’s always the right time to get expert support.
